Persistent rain throughout the day slashed the attendance at the 169th Fettercairn Show. Despite this the show proved to be a success, with entries up in many of the competitions.

Those who braved the rain enjoyed a host of attractions including vintage vehicles, a parade of horses, dancing and entertainment from the City of Brechin pipe band. There were more trade stands than last year and a good turnout of craft stalls was also reported.

Perhaps given the warmest welcome were the dairy cattle which retruned to the Fettercairn Show in force after a two year absence.

Above: Laurencekirk and District Rotary Club had a stall at the show, featuring hoopla and other fun attractions.

Organisers were disappointed last year when entries in the cattle section were dramatically down and were particularly disheartened that there were no dairy cattle at all on.

The previous year the show itself had to be cancelled due to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth. There were no such problems this year and an excellent turn out of cattle, sheep and horses meant that entries were up in every livestock category. Overall cattle champion was Jim Muirhead, Firhills Farm, Letham Grange with two year-old Charolais bull Moyness Statesman. This bull was also Fife and Alyth champion. Reserve cattle champion was Sandy Brown, Reidhall, Edzell with the 18 month-old Limousin cross heifer Lyn. Mr Brown's heifer was reserve champion at the Angus Show.

In the sheep section the overall champion was a Suffolk ewe lamb owned by Colin & Gordon scott, Maud, Peterhead. Reserve sheep champion was Alan Petrie of Lintrathen, Kirriemuir with a Blackface tup shearling.

A local man triumphed in the horse section. The overall champion was three year-old Clydesdale mare Phesdo Michelle by Collessie Cut Above and out of Cairnfinton Farewell. The mare was shown by Jim Aitken of Phesdo Stables, Laurencekirk who has been showing Clydesdales at the Fettercairn Show for more than 50 years.

Reserve overall was 9 year-old Irish Draught/Thoroughbred hunter Lord Marek from Jane jeffries of Drumoak, Banchory.

Mearns and District JAC had a Guess the Bull's birthday stand at the show. They also had a display of some of the activities of the club during the year.

Bob Jaimeson, Auchenblae, exhibited Billy and Millie on behalf of the mearns Vintage Vehicle Club. The dolls originated in Wales in 1982. Powering Billy is a JAP 1942 engine and Millie is powered by a Stuart Turner 1951.
TOP DANCING EVENT DESPITE THE WEATHER
Rain forced the dancing competition inside the marquee, but this did nothing to lessen the standard of competition or the enjoyment of the young people taking part.

Trophy winners from the dancing competitions
Ross Agri Services, St Cyrus were one of the two Trade stand winners at the show. Show President Sandy Middleton presents a bottle of whisky to Bill Ross.
Members of the local Guide Association ran a bottle stall at the show.
Shetland pony champion was brood mare Westpark Elmareen, shown by Shirley Moro, Redhall House, Fordoun.
Overall champion in the horse section was three year-old Clydesdale mare Phesdo Michelle shown by Jim Aitken, Phesdo Stable, Laurencekirk.

Kincardineshire Pony Club had A and B teams competing in Pony Club Games at the Fettercairn Show. Despite the soggy conditions, the riders and ponies managed to entertain the crowd. The A team, left of picture are Katie Francis, Colleen Rae, Tori Francis, Danielle Hudson and Sarah Bennett. The B team are Sheena Mathers, Rachel Tindal, Jess Lawman and Laura Wood. Missing from the B team is Kirsty Braes.

The folk of the Mearns clearly missed the Fettercairn Show last year— which was cancelled like all agricultural events, due to the outbreak of foot and mouth — and they were out in force for it's return on Saturday. The weather stayed fair, and an afternoon programme which included the parade of horses, machinery and vintage vehicles and the added attraction of a dog scurry, drew a good crowd of around 2,000.

Champion in the Cyldesdale horse section was the five-year old mare, Heatherwick Lady Luck, shown by Tom Gillies, Laurencekirk.

The main disappointment for the organisers was the cattle section where entries were dramatically down, and to the dismay of the exhibitors who did turn out they were not included in the parade due to a change in show policy. For the first time in years there were no dairy cattle at all on show.

Overall champion was the leader of the Simmental section, where there was only one exhibitor, Gerald Smith of Swellhead Farm at Blairs, Aberdeen , who had been persuaded to make a return to Fettercairn after an absence of several years. His champion was his six-year-old home-bred cow, Drumsleed Gayle, a daughter of Preston Boomerang. In her last show season in 2000, she was champion at the Keith, Banchory and Angus Shows.

The overall sheep champion was the Texel leader from another exhibitor from the north, Wendy Willox of Hawthorn Brae, St Katherines, lnverurie. She was showing the home-bred gimmer by Turin Gael that was also breed champion at this year's Angus Show. Reserve overall in the sheep section was the Blackface champion, a home-bred gimmer shown by Pamela Forbes for Eastmill (Eastmill Farm), Glenisla. Unusually, it was an orphan lamb From Auldallan shepherd Alan Petrie and reared on the bottle by his wife Isobel that took the reserve title in the Blackface ring.

Members of Laurencekirk and District Rotary Club ran a hoopla stall and whisky trail at the show.

The overall champion in the section for horses and ponies at the show which saw entries hold as strong as ever, was the five-year-old Highland pony mare Westlodge Annie from Karen and Robin Stewart, Stablesbrae, Durris. Reserve overall was the two-year-old Welsh section B colt Eyarth Mowgli being produced for Mrs. Roseanne Duncan by Creig Stables Rinnes View, Keith. This colt took the overall Mountain and Moorland championship with the large breeds winner, the Connemara mare Kingswells Swift from Mrs. Kay Gibb, in reserve overall place.

A hasty journey from Stoneleigh where he was judging at the Royal Show proved well worth the trouble for local Clydesdale breeder Tom Gillies of Laurencekirk. He took the heavy horse championship with his home-bred five-year-old mare Heatherwick Lady Luck

Supreme Champion in the cattle section at Fettercairn Show was the six-year-old Simmental cow Drumsleed Gayle, shown by Gerald Smith, Swellhead , Blairs. Gerald's wife Morag holds the champion's calf.

Shetland pony champion was the eleven-year-old brood mare, Westpark Elmareen, shown by Shirley Moro, Redhall House, Fordoun.
